“This is a river that earns and demands great respect, and in repayment graces you with the rarest of pleasures” - Overview of the Snowy River on wikiriver.com

After spotting this river while ski-touring in the winter, we vowed to come back with rafts in Spring. We researched the stretch from Charlottes Pass to Guthega Dam, and it looked doable if we skipped the grade 4 gorges above Spencers Creek and went straight for the grade 3 stuff below. And what an awesome trip!

We hiked up beside the river from Guthega Carpark and put in just above the confluence of Spencers Creek. The first rapid gave us a bit of a fright and we scouted all the big-looking stuff from there on, and portaged some of it by hiking around in the (often knee-deep) snow.

As we got closer to Guthega Dam it flattened out a bit and the rapids became super friendly and fun. We finished in time to get a pie in Cooma for lunch. Days like these are what we live for!
